Shinsegae Myeongdong Main Store currently stands where Korea’s first department store used to be in the 1930s. On October 23, Seoul’s Jung-gu District Office said, “Myeongdong Street, which will be reborn as a ‘Free Display Zone for Outdoor Advertisement’ over the next decade, will be named ‘Myeongdong Square’ and start a full-fledged business.” A free display zone for outdoor advertisement refers to a specific area that allows free installation of advertisements by significantly easing related regulations, such as size, shape, and color of outdoor advertisements.
